Memorial Gifts

Mrs. Herman Sokol

Samantha (left) and Jenifer Schweitzer at the dedication of “The Sandra W. Meyer Seminar Room for Cancer Research” in memory of their mother. A profile of the Schweitzer sisters and their mother appeared in the summer 2004 issue of Discovery (82k PDF).

In 1997, Jenifer and Samantha Schweitzer lost their mother, Sandra Meyer Schweitzer, to breast cancer. The sisters, both of New York City, felt it was important to memorialize their mother and started a small foundation in her honor. Shortly after, their accountant, Whitehead Board of Associates member Jeffrey Shulman, suggested they meet Dr. Robert Weinberg, a pioneer in cancer research and a Founding Member of Whitehead Institute. After visiting Weinberg, the sisters decided that contributing to basic scientific research would be the best legacy to honor their mother. In June of 2000, Jenifer and Samantha made a major gift to the Weinberg lab in her memory, and the Institute’s third floor conference room was named for her.

Gifts like the Schweitzers’ are a way to honor the memory of someone dear to you and, at the same time, support vital research and education programs at Whitehead Institute. Memorial contributions are acknowledged to both the donor and the honoree; gift amounts are not disclosed. To make a memorial gift, please complete this form (444k PDF) and mail it to Whitehead Institute.
