Constance Stein Lectures

Whitehead’s first Constance Stein Lecture was given by Richard Lifton of Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Yale University on “Genes for Heart, Kidney, and Bone Disease: New Insights for Human Genetics Studies.” The talk was held Thursday, March 20, 2004, in the McGovern Auditorium.

Constance “Connie” Stein, during the first half of her life, was married to Edwin “Jack” Whitehead. For both of them, it was their first marriage. Even after they both remarried, they had mutual respect for one another and gained satisfaction from the successes in each others’ lives.

It is a tribute to both of their generous spirits that Connie derived pleasure from her affiliation with the place that Jack built. She was always supportive of the Whitehead Institute and followed its work with pride. When told that a contribution had been made to support a lectureship named in her honor, she was thrilled not only to be honored, but to be recognized in association with an event that expands the boundaries of knowledge.
