Alex d'Arbeloff named Chair of Whitehead Board of
Directors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Dec. 8, 2004) — Alex d’Arbeloff
has been named Chair of the Board of Directors for Whitehead
Institute for Biomedical Research. d’Arbeloff,
former Chair of the MIT Corporation, founder of Teradyne,
Inc. and current Professor of the Practice at MIT Sloan
School of Management, succeeds Maxine Singer, President
Emerita of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.
d’Arbeloff is best known for his role in founding
Boston-based Teradyne, Inc. in 1960, a pioneer in the
automated test equipment industry. During his tenure
as CEO and Chair, Teradyne became an internationally
recognized company and grew to $1.7 billion when d’Arbeloff
stepped down as CEO in 1997.
d’Arbeloff has been a member of the MIT Corporation
since 1989, and was Chair of the Corporation from 1997
to 2003, when he joined MIT Sloan School of Management
where he teaches courses in innovation and leadership.
He is currently an investor and director of several
private companies in the Boston area and a director
of Pegasystems, Inc. He is a fellow of the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences and a director of the Isabella
Stewart Gardner Museum. d’Arbeloff was recently
honored by the International Institute of Boston with
the Golden Door Award which celebrates a U.S. citizen
of foreign birth who has made extraordinary contributions
to American society. He has been a member of Whitehead
Institute’s Board of Associates since 1997.
