miRNA diagram

miRNAs are cut out of longer RNAs that fold back on themselves to form hairpin-like strucures. To identify miRNA genes, the MiRscan ranks the predicted hairpins that are conserved in the genomes of two related animals based on the seven criteria listed in the figure above. The 21 nucleotides of a predicted miRNA are circled in pink.
