Technical Assistant I/II - Rubins Lab

Summary

Designs and performs bench level experiments and small independent research projects to support scientific research objectives of the Rubins Lab. The Rubins lab studies interaction of poxviruses with host cells, and uses methodologies such as microarray profiling at single base pair resolution of both the virus and host cell, in combination with microscopy and RNA and protein biochemistry.  Incumbent will  analyze experimental data, address methodological problems in experimental protocols and results, and report data to supervisor.   Uses discretion in prioritizing and organizing workflow and in optimizing methodologies and results.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the Principal Investigator or other project manager, designs and conducts bench level experiments and small independent research projects.
  • Independently operates lab equipment and prepares and orders necessary supply stocks.  May work with vendors to address equipment, reagent, or supply issues.
  • Performs analysis of experimental results by identifying methodological problems and helping to identify and implement modifications in research protocols.
  • Documents, compiles, and assists in interpreting experimental data.  Reports data to supervisor in oral and written reports.
  • May assist Technical Associate or project manager with determining the order of research processes that best support essential project goals.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to complete investigations.
  • Prepares, orders, and maintains stocks of necessary reagents, solutions and supplies.
  • May consult scientific literature as needed.
  • Other tasks as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a field directly related to the work.  Must have 1-2 years of experience working in a research laboratory.  (Master's degree, at least one year of directly related, full time lab experience).
  • Proficient in basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology required.
  • Knowledge of various scientific databases and publications preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills required.
  • Strong background in biochemical techniques (RNA and protein) required, molecular biological techniques preferred.  Cell culture experience preferred.
