Course
Information
This series of three bioinformatics mini-courses will introduce
you to a broad scope of bioinformatics tools, providing both
theory and practical applications. The courses are self-contained
and thus you can take any combination of the three courses.
Approximately half of each two-hour session will be devoted
to lecture-style instruction to provide you with the necessary
bioinformatics skills. The second half of each session will
focus on “hands-on” experience to exercise these
skills.
During each session, exercises related to the material discussed
in the lecture will provide the opportunity to apply the practical
bioinformatics tools.
Laptop computers will be available for use during the class
sessions.
Who Should
Take this Class?
This course is appropriate for lab biologists or lab managers
with a good understanding of molecular biology. Familiarity
with web-based bioinformatics tools is a plus, but not a requirement.
These courses will cover some of the same material as in our
previous lecture style courses – both the 10-week course
in 2002 and the 2-day course in 2003. However, these mini-courses
will be geared towards practical application of bioinformatics
tools.

Course
Objectives
Each course will expose you to different bioinformatics
tools.
• Learn the key methods and tools used in bioinformatics
• Be prepared to use bioinformatics in your own work
• Build a solid foundation and acquire the vocabulary
you need to supervise or to communicate with others who use
these tools
Course Material
There is no book required for this course, but the following
are useful resources:
Developing Bioinformatics Tools (Gibas)
Bioinformatics (Mount)
